The importance of architecture for enhanced learning

Social change is leaving its mark in the educational sector. There’s a clear move away from conventional classrooms and ‘frontal teaching’ to more learner centred group work, and team teaching is taking centre stage. In order to promote and enhance this learning experience careful attention must be paid to the architecture.

 

It’s important to think about the interior design in terms of the specific needs of both teachers and learners - creating a multi-functional environment tailored to dedicated purposes; for meetings, for play, for group work... Colours and materials play a major role in creating an inspiring atmosphere in which students are increasingly shaping their own lessons. 

Great, spacious play rooms which recognise the principles of order and fundamental well-being, provide the ideal framework for students to develop and flourish. The vocational school of Embelgasse in Vienna is a perfect example of this. The students enter the classrooms on the second floor directly, via a spacious two-storey foyer. Fresh air, light and luscious green shades permeate the building from the Hofgarten (courtyard garden/playground.) The classrooms are transparent towards the communication area - creating a stimulative, collaborative learning arena which features sturdy modern seating made from durable and versatile materials.

The trend is moving towards multifunctional education environments

In the future it seems we will see stronger conjunctions between nurseries, schools and education environments. Spaces which serve numerous purposes, blending the arenas of play and learning. Strong design concepts which adapt well to these developments will be an important factor in architecture for educational environments in the next few years.
